A few months ago I came across this really helpful tweet about consistency. I Went through it and wrote a few helpful tips down, although I really loved the tips the one that struck me most was titled “eat the frog first” which in theory meant “Always do the hardest task first”. I never really gave it much thought but I found the tittle itself interesting and now thinking over it I somehow find sense in it. When we have multiple tasks lined up, doing the hard ones first make the other ones easier to accomplish. For example? Let’s say we were back in the 80/90s and typically education is the key to success, now the average person has to go through series of educational stages successfully in order to secure a well paying job so basically the hardest task then would have been to study hard and ease each exam cause that would automatically make getting a job, a partner and a good life easier. Sense or nonsense?
For me, my case of eating the frog would probably be sitting down to write now. I dislike to work and be on my computer for hours, I like to relax and just bask in my nonchalant ways but I also hate disappointment and apparently you cannot have life your way so here I am working and smiling through the pain.
I also think I should have gone to a military school or something because I’m afraid nothing can help my indiscipline. I often say we go through rude awakenings that shape our habits and behavior but in this aspect of work?? Nothing seems to be helping.
And then there’s the entire process of niche finding, fitting into adulthood and it’s norms which in my case would be classified as loosing my mind every 4/7 days a week.
Thinking now, I remember how different things used to be. How our parents hid their worries and struggles whilst providing for us to the best of their capabilities. It’s true every generation is quite different from the last and each carries It’s own problems, theirs may have been bad governance, unemployment and probably HIV/AIDS, ours is a whole lot more. We’re battling bad governance, hunger, insecurity, excessive fraudulent activities, evil spirits, everything and anything just name it.
Then, deciding on the right field of study would most likely determine high chances of a well paying job, this explains why a lot of our parents are still hooked on the idea of making their children study professional courses like medicine, law, engineering but with us it’s very much different. There are a lot of things to become and a lot of fields to choose from and so the pressure builds up.
The current generation also has its perks. I mean the digital era that came with our generation is a madness. We have been exposed to many online advantages I wonder how much easier our parents would've had it if all they had to do was work from home, create enjoyable content and post, buy and re-sell products online instead of going to the market or even worked high paying remote jobs rather than moving from place to place periodically.
You could tell someone elderly “oh I help market peoples goods and earn commissions when I make sales through my phone” and they’d probably say “simple as that?” well in truth it's actually not as easy as most people make it sound (I’ve muted most of the affiliates I know because their aspire to perspire talks are getting too much😭) then again, isn’t it more convenient to work from the comfort of your house/bed without having to get up early preparing yourself daily for a 9-5? Exactly.
I haven’t had anything interesting happen to me lately so there’s not much to talk about, in the meantime I’ll share links to great contents I’ve consumed lately.
• A podcast I enjoyed laughing to
• A podcast that I have no words for.
• An insightful tweet about consistency.
• “A man called ove” (I saw a great review about the book so it’s my next read In Shaa Allāh, hopefully I don’t get lazy about reading it)
Love always, Maryam💕
Yes! Love the fact that you included evil spirits as one of our problems!😣
Also, I can relate to this whole work thing! It’s so draining and mentally exhausting when all you want to do is just eat and relax. But the worst part of it is knowing that you have work to do because that feeling is always at the back of your mind and ignoring it just means you have MORE work to do.
So yes eating the frog first = plenty sense!
Thanks for this piece, Mariam. Recently I decided to write my to-do list at the beginning of each week. Even though it has helped me organise my head and my life, I've been doing some things wrong. Like performing the smaller tasks first then patting myself on the back for long hours. Often times, I carry over parts of the bigger task into the next week because I didn't prioritize them. I guess this is my call-to-action and, because it is coming from you, it is my last warning.😂❤️
